It appears the AI built these creatures to infiltrate enemy ships, slipping inside the inner workings to sabotage systems during boarding operations. With the loss of the central artificial intelligence, these creatures now follow their default programming, attempting to destroy the systems of any ship that cannot be positively identified as a friend. While these creatures do have their own defence mechanisms, they are more feared for the damage they can do to a ship than a person.
