Lore As a faction based on the exaltation of freedom, the Ardent struggle mightily with the questions of leadership and organization, particularly as the roles and influence of the Mnemancers is rather limited within their creed. The Ardent are organized around authoritative individual figures, who have been elected by their peers and subordinates to lead. These are almost universally powerful and popular warriors, whose exploits command the respect of their peers. While few hard-and-fast rules exist on the requirements and procedures of leadership amongst the Ardent, one thing is clear: to lead amongst the Ardent, one must not merely have undergone the Dheukorro, the Descent, but must fully embrace it as a way of life. Exemplars of the Ardent creed, the Kerawegh have gone farther and deeper than any living Dweghom in the Dheukorro: they have reached the very gates of War’s Primordial prison. Refusing the dark call of that promethean threshold, the Kerawegh find in their devotion to kin and creed the strength to turn back to the surface. Acclaimed by their fellow Ardent, the respect they command among their fellows naturally pushes them into positions of leadership in their anarchic creed. Mighty warriors in their own right, the Kerawegh are a terror on the field not for their skill at arms, but rather for their ability to channel the faith and fervor of their brethren into harsh battlefield miracles. These savage miracles they are capable of invoking are not taught as there is nothing that resembles a church or structured faith amongst the Kerawegh. They are gifts earned at the very end of their Descent, on the very threshold of Wars primordial prison. Those few amongst the Kerawegh who care to speak of their new-found powers almost invariably describe how the clamor of war that all Dweghom hear throughout the Descent rises to a crescendo the closer one gets to War’s prison. Standing before the Gates, they are assailed with the din of a hundred concurrent battles despite being miles underground. The wisest amongst them suspect that these are the sounds of every battle and combat being fought on the surface, somehow echoing in the threshold of War’s demesne. But what all of them will agree upon is that some portion of their own soul or psyche is moved to respond to these brutal rhythms. Upon their return, they find themselves so intricately attuned to the din and clamor of battle that they are somehow capable to project that dreadful power onto those around them. Their already impressive martial prowess is heightened by the song of war, making them an unstoppable force whether in offence or defense.  Allies who heed their call are exhilarated by cadence of battle, each blow and cry granting them a reprieve or an opening they can exploit, while a Kerawegh’s foes hear only the screeching cries of breaking arms and the screams of the fallen, a discordant sound that saps their will to fight. Whether fate or chance or simple accident provide the blooded their gifts, few can argue that the Blooded are more than human. Their physical appearance can vary significantly, although most tend towards the massive proportions of their divine forefathers. Many see physical gifts and martial prowess and consider the Blooded lucky, unable to understand the combat that rages within each of these individuals. The wild blood of their divine ancestors cannot be easily denied, and they are prone to fits of manic energy and rage almost as often as periods of doom and despair. Their gifts manifest erratically, their senses sharpening until the stimulus overwhelms them, while other times a hyperactive adrenal system makes them insanely aggressive and violent. Unable to trust themselves, many of the Blooded choose the path of the recluse and the wanderer, fearing themselves more than they fear the dangers that lurk in the wilds of Mannheim. More at ease with the bestial side of their blood, they often form strong kinships with those who are also marked by divine blood, regardless of their own heritage. Their intuitive understanding of the burden and struggles they all endure is coupled with the physical might to impose themselves on those who could challenge them. When raids are planned, or musters drawn for battle, clever Jarls and Kings will seek out the Blooded within their realms and entice them to service to lead the… wilder… elements of their forces. Lore The Fireforged are a military force composed of those Dweghom who possesses a strong affinity for fire, but not enough power of discipline to become a Sorcerer.  Ostensibly guards to the Forge Temples of the Tempered, along with the Stoneforged and Steelforged, their gifted nature and implanted shunts give the Forged units a unique advantage on the field of battle: the use of enhanced exoskeletons and weaponry. Unlike their Stoneforged brethren, the exoskeleton of the Fireforged is focused simply on the delivery and containment of their main armament: the Blast Cannon. Based on a scaled down design of the Hellbringer Cannons used to hunt the greatest of dragons, the Blast Cannons draw and shape the uncontrolled gift of their Dweghom users to generate powerful directional blasts of superheated flame capable of puncturing even the heaviest of plate at a hundred paces. Their powered exoskeletons enhance their strength, allowing the Fireforged to remain mobile on the field of battle despite the weight of the Blast Cannon to deliver their powerful blasts where most needed. More than capable in close combat, the Fireforged can then follow up a devastating salvo with a savage charge, or easily fend off light units and skirmishers, allowing their heavy weaponry to be employed at bringing down the most heavily armored of foes. Among the highest echelons of the Lineages, none are truly expected to risk their lives anymore, much less for something as simple and trivial as combat. The chosen warriors of the Sovereign’s Lineages stride through the battlefield safely projecting their consciousness into their Avatara: outlandish creations bedecked in all sorts of ornament and Biomantic enhancements, whose lithe, androgynous frames bely the speed and power they can bring to bear. With almost no personal risk and minimal skill needed to become a deadly foe, many scions of the Lineages have taken to decorating their Avatara as ostentatiously as possible, for the body-vessels have made them such proficient killers that a tally of the slain foes is simply no longer a practical method by which to distinguish oneself. Woven from 100% pure exile tissue, their strands are improved upon and woven to produce superior specimens. Those that survive a brutal culling process undergo a brutal training regime to enter the Vanguard regiments. This first training regime focuses on physical development and a martial arts training. While Biomancers and Pheromancers might turn the soldiers into ravening automata and Lineage Highborn might be unstoppable on the field, it is the High Clone Executors who time and again deliver victories across a hundred different battlefields. To achieve the rank of Executor, a clone must have advanced through the ranks of the Vanguard Infantry and Infiltrators. This hard-earned battlefield experience grants them deep tactical and strategic insight that is seldom found within a Spire’s forces. Competition for recognition and advancement among the high clones is fierce and its expressions are not only physical and violent. These are broadly tolerated, if not encouraged, by their overseers, to enhance these desired traits and cull those lacking them. Those that survive and excel in the Infiltrator teams earn the right to don the powerful Pteraphon suits. It is a testament to the seductive nature of the raw physical power this suit provides (and the highly addictive cocktail of drugs and pheromones it secretes) that only a tiny fraction of those who survive long enough elect to abandon these suits and demand their selfhood be recognized. It is a curious aspect of Spire social structure that the concept of nation or state does not exist in that one is either acknowledged as a sentient being or is not. Once sentience is established, then all social standing and value is derived from one’s Lineage and personal achievement. And yet, while their individuality is recognized, High Clones are stigmatized with the ‘Clone’ moniker despite having proven their value to the Spire through grueling and dangerous service in order to secure their right to selfhood. This leaves the newly recognized High Clones with but one of two choices for advancement: join the Arenas or seek the patronage of a Lineage. Of the two paths, it is often remarked that joining a Lineage is by far the most hazardous; in the Arena, the saying goes, you at least know who your adversaries are. Nothing, on the other hand, has prepared a High Clone for the machinations and power plays of Lineage politics. Lacking the refined education of their Spire betters, veteran High Clones possess only those skills they have earned on the battlefield. Tactically knowledgeable as infantry men and strategically acute as infiltrators and Pteraphon riders, High Clones excel at what they do but not always at the society they live in. A fraction of them have managed to adapt and employ their training in politics, rising above their intended station. Most often than not, they are given a modest stipend and employed as ceremonial guards, (since the real bodyguard roles for the truly exalted amongst their society are reserved for those creatures whose loyalty and combat capacity are compelled by Biomantic means). Those who are not content with these limited roles must vie to be recognized as Executors, officers in one of the Sovereign Lineages’ armies. In order to advance through the ranks, Executors must have proven and keep proving their ability time and again, both on the field of battle and without. They must secure chances at proving their capacity, provide victory on the battlefield and be able to claim credit for that victory, always vying against backstabbing colleagues, jealous superiors and ruthlessly demanding masters.
