Lore: While female Speakers display an admirable affinity to the carnivorous Raptors that dwell within their primal lands, they are not the only cavalry the W’adrhŭn can bring to bear. Riding juvenile Brontoceratops (the elder beasts being too stubborn and docile to be goaded to battle) the Thunder Riders descend on the enemy formations in an unstoppable avalanche of muscle, crest and violence. The sheer power and impact these mounts can bring to bear as they stampede and trample enemy lines has earned these young riders a terrifying reputation that belies their years. How they Play: The W'adrhŭn version of Heavy Shock Cavalry, the Thunder Riders focus more on a debilitating Charge rather than sustained combat, even though their defensive stats would naturally protect them. Although their Movement stats are more in line with Brutes, this Cavalry Regiment will give any defensive formation a real run for its points. Driven by their own sense of superiority and perfectionism, initial failures led the Spires to create the Primes: W’adrhun bodies powerful and perfect enough that they could be animated by the Primordial Aspects of War, Death, Famine and Conquest. Prematurely unleashed upon the Dweghom during the Fall, Conquest, the living goddess of the W’adrhun orchestrated their escape and survival even as her siblings each perished in the conflagration. Bred for war and baptized in the flames of battle, the W’adrhun have nonetheless struggled to find their own path in the world, seeking to shape their own culture away from the overwhelming influence of their own tailored creation.

For our readers less familiar with Armoured Clash, we have provided a quick guide to the game and its intriguing, weird Colonial Wars setting on page 14. You will also find a link to an assembly and painting guide there, so you can get your new recruits on the table in next to no time. Elsewhere in this issue, we conclude our Partizan coverage with a look at a few more of the UK’s best demo tables, including a run-through of our own Ruins of Jerash Assassins and Templars game. We share details of the Society of Ancients Battle Day, present background and a Midgard scenario for an epic Viking clash, and get down in the ditches with several articles relating to our theme of Trench Warfare.

We have a wargaming mélange for you this month, with articles from our intrepid contributors taking you from Tibet to Traitor’s Toll and from Last Days to Lugdunum. This issue also showcases Alan Perry’s talents as both sculptor and illustrator; on our cover, his art depicts French infantry from the Napoleonic Revolutionary Wars, and in the article on page 34, we take a look at those same soldiers in three-dimensional form. Alan tells us more about the design and history of these new Perry Miniatures plastics. Alongside our twelve articles, we review several major new releases, including SAGA Age of Caesars and two sets of Bohemian Knights from North Star. Release Radar also previews loads of other new products. There is something for every wargamer in this issue, with plenty keeping me enthused as we head out of summer and into those autumn evenings, which are ideal for gaming!

Wi466, October 2026 We wargamers are nothing if not predictable, so, considering this month’s freebie frame giveaway, you will of course expect that quote from the film Zulu: “Zulus, thousands of ’em” – that’s what we’re giving away with this issue of Wargames Illustrated magazine. But not just Zulus: there are Redcoats and British Cavalry as well – hundreds of ’em. On the Zulu frame, you will find 71 dynamic figures, including charging, shooting and casualty poses – plus a cow! The British Army frame features Redcoats and their Natal Native allies, while the smaller British Cavalry frame contains four different types of British and allied horsemen. We are sure you will agree that the design and production of these brand-new Black Powder Epic models represent another step forward for this fantastic range of miniatures. Inside the magazine, you will find supporting content for your new models, including an interview with Warlord head honcho and Anglo-Zulu War buff John Stallard, a scenario by Anglo-Zulu War author Chris Peers, and a model-making showcase by our own Matt Parkes.
